Our AAA Extended Warranty Review And Methodology

If you’re already a AAA member or are thinking of becoming one, the AAA extended warranty could be worth it. The benefits and discounts you receive as a member are pretty strong perks. Plus, chances are you already trust the company and are comfortable with the service you receive. However, AAA extended warranties aren’t offered nationwide, so keep in mind that this may not be an option for you if you’re shopping for warranty coverage.

How We Rated AAA Extended Warranties

To give you the most up-to-date information, we update our review standards several times each year. Our warranty research evaluates providers in the following categories:

Industry Standing

AAA as a whole is widely known and reputable throughout the United States and Canada. In business since the early 1900s, AAA Inc. has accreditation from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and holds an A+ rating. In addition, it’s paired up with other well-known companies, such as T-Mobile, to provide roadside assistance perks for consumers.

Coverage

AAA extended warranty coverage varies depending on which club you belong to. There are 43 individual clubs throughout North America, making it difficult to receive generalized information on AAA extended warranties. Keep in mind that not all clubs offer extended warranty coverage, so you’ll need to check in with the club nearest to you for more information.

Cost

As is the case with AAA extended warranty coverage options, you’ll need to contact your local club to find out more information on costs. However, we’ve found clubs that offer $100, $50, or $0 deductibles depending on the repair facility you use, which is a good deal and could save you from paying a lot out of pocket for repairs.

Transparency

AAA doesn’t offer much transparency when it comes to its extended warranties. We couldn’t find sample contracts, pricing, or any information on a money-back guarantee. While this doesn’t mean that these things don’t exist with AAA, you’ll need to contact your local club if you want to find any information on this.

Customer Service

There are no reviews for AAA on its primary business page. However, profiles for AAA through Consumer Affairs and TrustPilot have largely negative reviews. In addition, these reviews are primarily directed toward AAA’s roadside assistance offerings, not its extended warranty plans.

Are AAA Extended Warranties Worth It?

While AAA is a well-known company throughout North America, we are unimpressed with its lack of transparency when it comes to its extended warranty plans. In addition, coverage may not be available through AAA depending on where you live. We suggest obtaining quotes from some of the best aftermarket car warranty companies to find the right coverage for your needs.

Pros Direct payment of claims Disappearing deductible with service at AAA facilities Customizable plan lengths
Cons Only available to AAA members Each AAA is regional, making coverage availability inconsistent

About AAA

The American Automobile Association (better known as AAA or “Triple A”) is a coalition of motor clubs throughout the United States and Canada. It has nearly 60 million members in North America, and provides benefits and services to its card-carrying members like discounts on automotive care, roadside assistance benefits, or special rates on hotels and fuel purchases.

AAA is best known for its emergency roadside services which include:

  • Towing
  • Lockouts
  • Tire changes
  • Automotive first aid
  • Battery jump-starts and replacements

These services are handled by local companies contracted by a state-administered AAA club.

Are AAA Extended Warranties Legit?

AAA is a legitimate provider of extended car warranties. The company is accredited with the BBB and holds an A+ rating, and operates various regional motor clubs throughout the United States and Canada. While best known for its roadside assistance offerings, it offers extended warranties, auto insurance, banking services, and more.

AAA Extended Warranty Customer Reviews

The BBB gives AAA’s primary business profile an A+ rating. However, most comments and feedback are in reference to roadside assistance and other membership concerns.

We were unable to find reviews, comments, or feedback directly related to AAA’s extended warranty offerings, so we recommend asking people in your network, friends, or family if they’ve had experience with AAA’s extended warranties.

AAA Extended Warranty Coverage

AAA members each belong to one of the 42 individual clubs throughout North America, and the clubs, in turn, own AAA. This means that, while some membership benefits are consistent under the national organization, many service offerings – including AAA extended warranty coverage – are club-specific.

Not all AAA clubs offer extended auto warranty packages. For instance, we spoke with a representative from the AAA Auto Club South (which serves AAA members in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee) who reported the company halted its vehicle protection program as of January 2018. We also couldn’t find any reference to extended warranty or vehicle protection plans on the websites for AAA Southern California or AAA Northern California.

While our previously published review on AAA extended warranty coverage included information on warranty plans for members in North and South Carolina, AAA Carolinas is no longer taking on any new extended warranty policy holders. Existing policy holders can be reassured that their warranties are still valid.

We recommend contacting your regional club to confirm whether or not it offers (or continues to offer) extended warranty coverage in your area of residence. If you live in the Mid Atlantic area of the U.S., you’re in luck – the club that services this area readily offers information on its warranty offerings. AAA Warranty Plans

AAA Club Alliance serves residents in parts of Connecticut, Ohio, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, as well as AAA Blue Grass and Bluefield Regions, Southern West Virginia, Kansas, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Delaware, Maryland, and Washington D.C.

AAA Club Alliance’s Vehicle Protection Plan comes in three levels: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Here’s what each AAA extended warranty covers:

AAA Warranty PlanWhat It Covers
SilverComponents related to air conditioning and heating, basic electrical group, cooling system, drive axle group (front or rear), engine group (diesel and gas), seals and gaskets, taxes and fluids, transmission, and turbocharger/supercharger systems.
Gold and PlatinumAll components covered with the Silver plan, in addition to ABS, brake group, power steering group, and suspension group systems.

If there are differences between the Gold and Platinum Vehicle Protection Plan, AAA Club Alliance’s website doesn’t specify what they are. Again, you’ll need to contact the club for a more detailed breakdown of each plan.

AAA Warranty Benefits

See below for a list of perks that come with a warranty from AAA Club Alliance:

  • 100 percent of diagnostics, labor, and parts are paid for all covered repairs on an approved claim
  • Emergency self-approval is allowed for claims up to $500
  • Free one-time battery replacement
  • Zero percent financing for up to 24 months
  • Trip interruption reimbursement
  • Rental car reimbursement up to $175
  • Direct payment of claims to repair shops
  • No inspection needed to enroll your vehicle (there’s a waiting period instead)
  • Plans are fully transferable (fees and conditions apply per state)

What Does a AAA Warranty Not Cover?

You’ll need to contact AAA Club Alliance directly to find out what its warranties don’t cover, as its website doesn’t give you a detailed breakdown for its Vehicle Service Contracts. However, you likely won’t find coverage for wear and tear parts of your car, such as tires, paint, and upholstery.

AAA Extended Warranty Cost

To find out what a AAA extended warranty will cost, you’ll have to call your regional club directly for more information. The price of an extended warranty is normally based on your specific car and selected coverage level. With AAA’s different options based on location, the cost could especially vary.

You can assume that, as with all warranties, the older the car and higher the mileage, the more expensive it will be to cover. See our infographic below that highlights our consumer survey findings on average initial purchase prices for both third-party and dealership warranties.

AAA Extended Warranty Reviews: Conclusion

An AAA extended warranty can offer you peace of mind when dealing with vehicle part damages and breakdowns. However, depending on your region, coverage and benefits may differ. In addition, not all AAA clubs offer extended warranties to their members. While AAA can be a good option, we recommend comparing multiple provider quotes before making a decision.
