Our Assurant Warranty Review And Methodology

An Assurant extended warranty is an extended automobile warranty issued by Assurant Inc., a global provider of risk management solutions headquartered in New York City. A Fortune 500 company, Assurant was founded in 1892 and provides insurance products in several industries, including the device, property, and casualty sectors.

How We Rated Assurant Warranty

To give you the most up-to-date information, we update our review standards several times each year. Our warranty research evaluates providers in the following categories:

Industry Standing

For this category, we consider a company’s history and ratings from organizations like the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Assurant, Inc. is a global provider of insurance products and has been around since 1892. The Warranty Group is the warranty services provider Assurant acquired in 2018. Taken together, we give Assurant extended warranty a solid 4.0-star rating for industry standing.

Coverage

We consider the variety of plans available, terms offered, and perks like roadside assistance when we rate extended warranty companies for coverage. Assurant offers five levels of coverage with benefits such as rental car reimbursement, roadside assistance, and travel expense reimbursement (except in New York) included in all plans.

Cost

For this review, our team sourced quotes from Assurant for a 2017 Honda CR-V with 45,000 miles and a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado with 50,000 miles. What we discovered were prices at or slightly above the industry average. All things considered, we give Assurant warranty a 4.0 out of 5.0-star rating in the cost category.

Transparency

If a company makes it easy to find sample contracts and offers a money-back guarantee, we give it a high rating for transparency. We can’t say that Assurant comes through in either instance, so we give the company a 2.5-star rating here.

Customer Service

Assurant receives solid customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot and the BBB. However, we didn’t have a great experience when gathering warranty quotes from the company. The process was generally confusing and our call was transferred three times before we connected with the right person. Overall, we give Assurant warranty 3.9 out of 5.0 stars for customer service.

What Does An Assurant Extended Warranty Cover?

Assurant coverage ranges from basic powertrain coverage to complete bumper-to-bumper extended warranties that protect most parts and systems after mechanical breakdowns.

Assurant Extended Warranty Plans

Here are the coverage plans you can get with an Assurant extended warranty:

  • Platinum: Covers almost every vehicle part with only a short list of exclusions. Available for vehicles with 150,000 miles or fewer.
  • Gold: Includes everything in the lower-tier Silver plan, as well as components like the anti-lock brake system, power doors and windows, and fuel sensor. Available for vehicles with 180,000 miles or fewer.
  • Silver: Includes everything in the lower-tier Powertrain plan, as well as the steering, front suspension, brakes, seals and gaskets, electrical system, and air conditioning. Available for vehicles with 200,000 miles or fewer.
  • Powertrain: Includes the engine, transmission, front-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive. Available for vehicles with 150,000 miles or fewer.
  • Engine: Covers the engine only. Available for vehicles with 150,000 miles or fewer.

With each coverage plan, you have access to additional benefits like roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement. All plans are transferable. To keep your warranty valid, you are required to retain copies of your maintenance receipts during the contract term.

A customer service representative from Assurant told us that its policies are administered solely through financial institutions and dealerships. The representative wasn’t able to name any specific companies that work with Assurant, and his tone wasn’t friendly.

What Does an Assurant Extended Warranty Not Cover?

As you’ll find with other extended warranty providers, an Assurant vehicle protection plan won’t cover damage that results from lack of maintenance, accidents, or environmental causes. Assurant warranties also don’t cover parts damaged by wear and tear, such as brake pads, wiper blades, and shock absorbers.

Assurant Extended Warranty Reviews: Conclusion

Due to our negative customer service experience and lack of specific service contract information from Assurant, our review team is hesitant to recommend an Assurant extended warranty to our readers.

Car Warranty Providers We Recommend

We suggest that you compare quotes from multiple extended car warranty companies. The following providers are ideal places to begin your search:

Endurance: 4.6 Stars

We give Endurance our Best Coverage award due to the variety and quality of vehicle protection plans it offers. There are six levels of warranty coverage to choose from with Endurance, with terms lasting up to eight years and over 200,000 miles. Along with perks like towing assistance and rental car reimbursement, you also get a free year of Endurance Elite benefits with every warranty. That includes things like key fob replacement, tire repair, and a personal concierge service to make the claims process even easier.

CarShield: 4.5 Stars

Like Endurance, CarShield offers six levels of warranty coverage. The company actually goes a bit further than Endurance when it comes to term lengths, with plans that last up to 10 years or 300,000 miles. That makes CarShield a great option for a used car warranty.

CarShield isn’t always the cheapest option, but it makes up for that with flexible contract terms. That’s why it receives our Best Monthly Payments award.
